NSS Programme Officer : Ms. D Maheswari

After independence the University Grants Commission, headed by S. Radhakrishnan, recommended the introduction of voluntary national service in academic institutions. In 24 September 1969, the then Union Education Minister V.K.R.V. Rao launched the NSS at 37 universities in all states.

The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. This programme inculcates social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity.

The National Service Scheme Unit in our college was started in the year 2016-17 with 100 volunteers. NSS helps the student to grow individually and also as a group. It makes the students confident, develops leadership skills, and gain knowledge about different people from different walks of life.

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

  • Understand the community in which they work
  • Understand themselves in relation to their community
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  • Practice national integration and social harmony

NSS volunteers participate in various programmes sponsored by the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, under the Government of India such as National Integration Camps, Adventure Programmes, Republic Day Parade and other Progammes organized by the NSS Regional Centre and Bharathiar University together.

NSS Programme Officers will ensure the basic aims of NSS Programme are achieved … i.e. Personality development of NSS volunteers, Interaction of the different classes of people, Awareness programmes and Special camp (Seven days) in adopted villages.
